"Beauty and the Ballot Box" honors the contributions of African American cosmetologists in the Voting Rights Movement.

Presenter Carolyn Jones is the current owner of Shreveport's Modern Beauty Shop and has strong ties to its former beauticians and activists like Ann Brewster and Mamie Love Wallace. The Modern Beauty Shop is where self-employed beauticians from Shreveport & Bossier organized crucial yet often overlooked political activities to reclaim voting rights. She spent much of her childhood and early career in the shop. Ms. Jones is one of Shreveport-Bossier's civil rights trailblazers in her own right.
